Waiting for a Grand Canyon Permit

The waiting time to get a permit for one who has their own kayak, canoe, raft etc., is upwards of 20 years. Meanwhile, commercial outfitters will take you down river tomorrow. Good deal for the outfitters, bad deal for my kayaker friend here.
Note: Permit system changed in recent years to a lottery, so one never really knows when a permit might become available.

Tom looks pretty good in that picture. Of course he still probably has many years to go on his wait. The CRMP was supposed to be finished in 2000, after a lawsuit it was supposed to be done this month, but now it is supposed to be done some time in the future. Anyone holding their breath awaiting its completion has turned purple by now.
