During Enver Hoxha's cultural campaigns of the 60s, all them osques and churches were destroyed, since he had outlawed religion. Berati was one of two 'museum cities' allowed to keep it's religious buildings (though, of course, they were turned into museums, not places of worship). The town features an ancient citadel on the top of a hill - still inhabited - and old turkish houses stacked on the side of the hill. it's QUITE cute.
