Popolo Ku Mai

The odd Hawaiian prickle leaf, solanum incompletum. An endangered plant naturally found at Pohakuloa (wild population: 11 plants), which has been successfully planted on various parts of Pu'u Huluhulu. They were believed to be extinct for many years, until rediscovered. Ungulates like to eat them, despite those impressive spines. They seem to lose some or all of the spines as the plant grows larger, or perhaps the number of spines varies by individual.
