Naio is abundant throughout various habitats on the island. Naio is dominant on certain parts of Mauna Kea's southwestern slopes, but isn't as widely spread around the mountain as mamane. Naio fruits are a favorite of some bird species, and the white and purple flowers attract nectar feeding birds.
