Kipuka Puaulu is an old horse pasture on Strip Road that became a bit of an arboretum in the earlier years of the national park. At some point it gained the misleading name "bird park" - probably because birds stir the interest of the average Jane more than trees do. Nevertheless, while it offers only the more common bird species (often too far up in the canopy to see well), Kipuka Puaulu has a nice collection of some of the rarest trees on Earth. (more recently also Kipuka Ki and a few other areas) There is a single small loop trail through part of the kipuka, but no official trails through the rest of it. Some of the 'ohi'a, koa and manele trees are impressively large, though many of the 'ohi'a are dead and koa are often in the process of falling apart.
