Hawai'i Creeper

Powerline Road, Kipuka Ahiu

This photo illustrates how difficult it can be to differentiate creepers from 'amakihi. Both species are similarly sized, have similar foraging behavior, and green-yellow-grey colors with black lores. The photo doesn't emphasize the creeper's raccoon mask, or its slightly differently shaped bill. The pale color of the bill is one clue, as is the dark stripe behind the eye. It was the creeper sounds that gave this bird's identity away, or I never would have bothered to take a photo.
