Himalayan ("Kahili") Ginger

Makawao Forest Reserve, East Maui

This Himalayan ginger is among the worst threats to native Hawaiian forests, and on its own can completely deforest areas by shading out understory and preventing new generations of trees and shrubs from growing. This infestation in Makawao Forest Reserve is perhaps the most serious I've ever seen - the camera only shows one direction but there were huge swathes of nothing but ginger under the trees in every direction. The seeds are spread by alien birds.
