'Io

Kipuka 'Ainahou

I encountered this incredible light-phase 'io napping on a koa branch at eye level at the edge of a small clearing in kipuka 'ainahou. He was presiding over the clearing like a king on his throne, in the finest ermine and sable coat. I tip-toed quietly to the middle of the clearing and sat down to get the best photos I could with a mere 200mm lens from 15 meters, and was glad to be totally ignored. Direct blazing mountain sunlight on its white feathers and back and eyes in the deep shadows made only a few poorly exposed photos worth trying to salvage, and none of them hint at his shining magnificence. It was a great misfortune that I didn't have my telephoto lens that day. We shared the clearing for a half hour and the 'io made no motion to leave, so eventually I politely tip-toed away and left him to his nap.
