Anacardiaceae (Mango Family) - Neleau

Rhus sandwicensis - Hawaiian sumac. Neleau is one of the few native plants that is doing really well within Hilo Town, competing with the abundant plague of weed trees. It's frequently seen along roadsides, pastures and in other disturbed areas, particularly in the Kaumana area. Neleau grows in an attractive, neat and compact tree form, and its foliage often has a wonderful mix of greens, yellows and red-oranges. Do not mistake it for the gunpowder trees or young african tulip/flame trees that are common in the same areas.

Neleau flowers in late September.
