Today brought rain to La Crosse. Just a drizzle, most of the day. I slept in, not expecting much, and was surprised to see it was fairly dry. I got out just after dawn - it started raining just as I started my bird count, and by the end the wind picked up and I was getting a bit soaked. Some of the flocks that were around yesterday were absent today - house finches, cedar waxwings and gold finch - but others such as robins were still around. Generally counts were much lower. Far fewer downy woodpeckers, perhaps because I could not hear their soft pecking in the rain.

I was occupied with family outings until sunset. The rain briefly paused about the same time, and I went out for another sweep through Holmberg Trails. Numbers were down quite a bit from the morning, as expected. I did find some tufted titmouse in the usual place, at least.
