Rice Hat Nebula

Sharpless2-223 (upper left) and 224 (lower right) are dim objects in the constellation Auriga.
Sharpless2-224 (the "Rice Hat") is a supernova remnant, characterized by billowing clouds of hydrogen
(red) and oxygen (blue-green). The "hat" section is probably caused by the expanding supernova
material encountering an area of lower density, allowing the material to spread more easily in this
area.

Sharpless2-223 was once also designated as a supernova remnant based on its generally spherical shape
and its shell-like appearance. However, in recent years astronomers have determined that it is
in fact a hydrogen emission nebula, set glowing by the radiation from young hot stars.
