NGC 1097 is a galaxy 65 million light years away in the constellation
Fornax. The central area of this galaxy includes a bright ring of new star
formation, fueled by its active central black hole. It has also interacted
in the relatively recent past with a satellite galaxy, NGC 1097A. This
interaction has created 3 dim streams of stars visible in this image:
a broad one at about the 10:00 position (which appears to have a strange right-angle
bend at the end of it), a more narrow stream at the 11:00 position,
and a very dim stream at the 4:00 position.
