This spiral galaxy is relatively close to us, at a distance of about
10 million light years. It would be a far brighter object in our sky,
but it lies nearly along the plane of our galaxy (on the border between
the constellations Cepheus and Cygnus) and so its light is diminished by
the dust and stars that lie between us and it. NGC 6946 contains more observed
super novae than any other galaxy (9 so far), and so has earned the nickname
"The Fireworks Galaxy".
