Tub Mill-Roaring Fork-framed.jpg

When the gate is raised in the mill run, the force of the water hitting this wooden turbine is strong enough to turn the axle that rotates the millstones above. These two stones would grind corn meal for the early mountain folks.

Surprising to see the turbine is horizontal. Perhaps it eliminates a direction changing element? V

Fantastic image on a number of levels: strong composition, of course, but it also shows how the mill works with the water spilling onto it. vote
