The fighting bucks Dick and I saw a few Sundays ago were a rare treat to witness but nothing like what we witnessed yesterday. As we photographed a small buck and a larger one in a gathering of does, another large buck entered the field very close to us and squared off with the larger buck. The two went at it tooth and nail for a full ten minutes, by the camera, without pausing to catch their breath. This was no jousting match; these guys wanted to kill each other. Near the end their tongues were hanging out from exhaustion. The distance from us ranged from 20 feet to 30 yards as they battled without concern for our presence. At one point they sidestepped down hill rapidly sideways in our direction, locked together, stopping barely 30 feet away. As I shot I could feel the ground shaking from the pounding of their hooves. The clash of the antlers, their snorting and the flying dust added to the adrenaline rush. At times I didn’t know whether to keep shooting or just watch them; it was that exciting. There were several deep cuts and the eventual loser appeared to have severely damaged his jaw. This was one amazing fight to have witnessed so up close and personal.

This is dramatic and I never thought that it got so serious till now.

amazing shots! and an amazing story! i had no idea you were such a fantastic photographer. thought you and Dick were just mosey-ing around the cove lol. boy was i shocked to see both yours and his photography. i'm literally jealous! glad you got to witness this. what you said about feeling the ground shake...that happened with the one in the video too.. i knew exactly what you meant! we were accidentally in the middle of it so we were about 20ft away at one point. their speed when they run another buck back is mind boggling, isn't it?? so impressed!
Excellent gallery deserving a vote. I like the way you have the 1st photo as the stalking buck. Only have one fighting animal shot & no one was injuredhttp://www.pbase.com/cits_4_pets/image/101017721
Id love to have been a spectator to see these guys fighting. What a splendid sight and to have caught it all on camera...Brilliant. Great work Buz...Big vote!!!

A fascinating event, marvelously captured. I think I might have put the camera down just to watch the action.
Stunning images from that awesome battle, Buz! That was one of the most exciting events I've ever seen in nature and you've captured each image with superb exposure and clarity.
Outstanding photography in every respect. VOTE!
Dick:)
