Mine Shaft

Locked steel gates like this one have been installed over all of the old mine entrances in the past few years. Prior to that time it was not unusal to come across local spelunkers going into the old shafts, which I was told were mostly in good condition. One group of college kids once asked me to identify some minerals they had seen. From the description I could only conclude that quartz crystals of several inches long remain behind in the old workings. I only wish I had the access, equipment and knowledge to explore them safely. I know enough not to venture into old mines without proper preparation. For now I prefer to work above ground.

I visited the Calumet Mine several times in the 1970's.
It's underground network is very unusual, comprised mostly of huge cathedral-sized rooms, connected by very large shafts. Lots of cave-in damage everywhere make this mine feel especially dangerous, as you're always walking over huge mounds of rock. The layout is also very disorienting, so you could get lost in there for awhile.
It was a fun time, we explored every mine we could find just for the adventure.
The Calumet was a fav - thanks for the photos.
