22nd - "Whisky Galore"

Cheltenham, Glos.

(Based on a true life event, Compton MacKenzie's story of a shipwreck full of whisky in the Hebrides was also made into a famous film)

Hehehe...it's a proven scientific fact that you can never have too much uisge beatha in the house!! Here we have from the left: Canadian Club Classic 12yr old; Crown Royal Canadian Whisky; Highland Park 16yr old single malt; Highland Park 15yr old single malt; Jim Beam Black Label Bourbon; The Famous Grouse (my 'cooking whisky'); Isle of Jura 10yr old single malt; and finally the lovely Irish Tullamore Dew Heritage Blend. Not in this picture is a nice bottle (is there any other kind?) of Glenmorangie - it's not in the picture because it was hiding behind the pasta and rice in the pantry and I overlooked it in my haste to set up the shot...

Blimey! This was involved, to say the least - and I was almost distracted by the subjects many times, but I put my art first and struggled on, despite my thirst!! I took three shots, each one illuminated by the off-camera flash in a different position (at the back left, at back right and in the back middle). I combined all three in CS3, erasing the unwanted bits until I'd achieved the right light across the frame. Flattened the image; created three duplicate layers - first one, I changed the Blending Mode to Screen and reduced the Opacity to around 25%. The second I changed the Blending Mode to Multiply, reduced Opacity to around 80% and added Gaussian Blur at 10%. Back to the first duplicate layer - I converted it to B&W via the Infrared pre-set; onto the second - B&W conversion via the High Contrast Red Filter pre-set. The third duplicate layer I moved to the bottom of the layers stack and added a Diffuse Glow to it to really make the highlights sing. A subtle almost-desaturation of the third layer has produced a lovely ochre glow. Lastly, I flattened the whole image and resized.

Perhaps more worrying than how long I spent faffing and fettling around trying to get this pic right, is the fact that The Famous Grouse is dangerously, nay apolyptically low! Crivens!

This is excellent and worth all the work! The processing and light on this is amazing! Mmmm Canadian Club and ginger ale is about as close to this stuff as I ever get!

Lovely shot - of course you had to adjust the levels in the bottles...

The backlight on this is nothing short of brilliant.

Nicely illuminated this firewater, well presented and very inviting too. LOL @ "Whiskey Galore", during our trip to Skye, Harris and Lewis long ago I had neglected to bring some "light" reading. I found "Whiskey Galore" at a small shop in Portee on Skye and what a serendipitous find it was as it was the perfect accompaniment to brisk walks, searches for lighthouses, wonderful hearty meals, lots of pints of McEwan's and the odd dram here or there. Wonderful memories and fun read too. :)

Love your collection. This is very good. I don't drink but have always enjoyed looking at the different bottles. Love the tones in this and hope you didn't have to waste too much time before you could have a taste1

Your discipline payed off.

A fine still life with exquisite light. I believe the word whiskey is an Anglicization of the Gaelic "uisce beatha" which means "water of life".

A nice collection!

Like this and like those - the composition and post processing seems to be a labour of love but well worth it the end result.

That should get you through the winter :)) Nice work Doug.

Great conception and execution, I raise a toast to you.

Wow, this is awesome. The backlit bottles have just the right amount of clarity and definition. I miss the dark rich color of the Crown Royal (my preference) however. Brilliant work! V

I wonder if Famous Grouse would be good in my cookies for the old folks home???
Sheila22-Jan-2010 13:59
"The Famous Grouse is dangerously, nay apolyptically low! Crivens!"
Well, what have you been putting it in? Cooking whisky! What on earth do you cook with it?
Absolutely beautiful image, cracking lighting.
J. Scott Coile22-Jan-2010 13:29

Wonderful collection Doug, a lovely contrast between color and B&W! Love it!
Phillip Normanton22-Jan-2010 10:37
Hic - ooh that's a lot of bottles. I only ever have one on the go at any one time - you must have lots of, err, restraint :o)
That reminds me, I have Whisky Galore recorded and ready to watch - it was on late last year I think. A project for the weekend :o)
Guest 22-Jan-2010 10:27
Excellent!! VOTED
Ann...22-Jan-2010 10:27
I think you need some help with these....emptying the bottles that is....you don't need any help with the processing, it's already excellent and the light is superb.
Stephanie22-Jan-2010 10:02
I thought that this was taken in a chic bar ~ this is YOUR house???? Well, my Belgian beer collection might compare to your whiskey collection..... (But I still think you have me beat!)
Superb image. Love the draping and lighting Doug! V

you deserve a drink after all that "layering". :>)
borisalex22-Jan-2010 06:35
You should cook with Jim Beam and bring Glenmorangie in front of this wonderful display! Great idea and choice of whiskeys, Prost!
