20th - "Thin Wealth"

Cheltenham, Glos.

(A beautiful poetic novel from Sheltand)

Another book I have read a billion times...a wonderful, timeless story set against the discovery of oil in the North Sea and the impact the Sullom Voe oil terminal has on the lives and loves of Shetland (that's such a simplistic description which does no service at all to Jamieson's wonderful story-lines, characterisations and elegant prose)

Another 'simples' shot today - I used the off-camera flash to give some definition to the penny; happily, this also produced a lovely ring of reflected light on the surface :o). Having enhanced the Clarity and Exposure slightly in ACR, I opened the file into CS3 and duplicated the background layer. This I converted to B&W via the Maximum White preset on a B&W adjustment layer. Next up, a bit of Dodge and Burn on the highlights and shadows to emphasise the contrasts. I flattened the image, sharpened the penny and smoothed out the background. Lastly, I Dodged the reflected ring of light before finally resizing

I think the lighting on this shot has worked out really well, and the angle of the coin - spot on.
