Osprey of the Spokane River

Although the Spokane River flows through forests of Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir from Lake Coeur'd-Alene to the Columbia River, the Osprey often choose power poles for their nest sites. The Spokane River has lots of dams and, therefore, a lot of power poles. Avista Utilities is one company that frequently erects separate poles and platforms for the birds to use to their benefit and our own. The photos here are of birds nesting on such a platform above Long Lake Dam and another pair nesting in a tree snag just below Nine Mile Falls Dam. These birds returned in mid-April and have been nest building. I hope to follow the pairs through to successful fledging.
