Lewisia rediviva Bitterroot

Twin Lakes, Lincoln Co, Washington

This beautiful flower emerges from the exposed outcrops of basalt rock in Spring. Named for the explorer Meriweather Clark, the species name 'rediviva' means "restored to life". The plant whithers and disappears for the summer but the fleshy roots were harvested by the tribes of the northwest for food. Clark's dry sample sprang back to life with moisture after remaining dormant for two years.
