These photos are from the trip I took out west in the spring of 2010. I drove from Waukesha, WI to Cottage Grove, OR, and stopped along the way to hang out with wonderful people and to explore new places that I have never seen before :)

Erik, It was nice to see the picture of you and your significant other- to give a face to "the person" who created such a collection of breathtaking images. I am a teacher of little kids and I shared some of your work with them because we are "in the rainforest" right now and learning about birds, life cycles, endangered species and other important things. Thanks for making your online galleries accessible; My little first graders "oooo!'ed and oh!'ed" all the way through your pictures. What I like the best about them is how your love of these critters can be felt by looking at the care you take over each composition. One doesn't get the sense that these are commercially motivated, and that is a rare and beautiful thing. I also show kids mass quantities of illustrations of beautiful, amazing birds which are now extinct. I show them scary deforestation operations and the Pacific Gyre. I tell them that I hope they will be better stewards of the earth and air than was my generation, because WE FAILED horribly; We let greedy people cut it down and chop it up. Because your photos are so beautiful, the kidlets can feel sympathy for the idea of preserving these animals. They asked me why do you take so many pictures of birds everywhere. I told them I don't know for sure, but maybe this man is afraid that THESE birds will also become extinct, so he is trying to take a picture of every one he can, quickly, before we never get to see them again. First graders don't yet have much of a discourse structure for expressing their sadness and distress over this unthinkable dilemma. Even without words, I see their anger and recognize that look-like they really want to punch whoever is destroying their world..... because they don't know any other solutions at the moment. I sure hope they remember all this when they are older and the baton has been passed. Thanks for helping me to teach some very important concepts! Rae McMaster
