Common Loon I rescued

Port Orford, OR - Pacific Ocean

I found this Common Loon trying to paddle up the sandy beach adjacent to the Port Orford information center. This loon was moving very lethargically, and after I looked at it through binoculars, I could see it had a wounded shoulder. I got in touch with Flying Free, the wildlife rehab center in Bandon. Immediately after that I went out and safely got the loon wrapped up in the blanket and brought it to the rehab center. This bird was one of the most beautiful birds I've ever seen.

Up close, loons are simply breathtaking (even more so than when viewed at a distance). I was definitely a little watery-eyed while holding this beautiful bird!

Not sure about the cause... the scapular area (shoulder of the wing connection to the body) was lacking feathers and pretty badly "scraped up". Being pushed by wave motion against rocks, or sharks, are two possibilities. On a happier note, it was released from rehab today :)

They are so stunning in real life and up close and personal it seems like it has to be unreal. So proud of you and your efforts to help her. Have you heard it is was lead poisoning?
