Once home to a lively and active Jewish community, Tarnaveni was also the birthplace of the famous 20th century classical music composer György Ligeti, also Jewish. The building, located directly on the main street, is now surrounded by communist-style bloc apartment buildings. Though functioning as a Hungarian cultural centre for close to 10 years, the centre director has also created a modest exhibition in the balcony area commemorating Tarnaveni Jewish history, Ligeti’s life as well as regional Hungarian folkloric culture and history.
