My wife and I go to Hawaii almost every year to see family and, if possible, hike to the top of Diamond Head, the most famous sight on Oahu. After paying an entrance fee, you can drive into the crater from the mauka or mountain side. The short, o.8 mile trail dates from 1908 and begins as a paved walkway but quickly turns into a volcano tuff train with many switch backs. It is said to be "strenuous" but all ages seem to do it without much difficulty and in a variety of dress...I have seen some tourist in high heels! The old 225 foot tunnel is now closed as new access to the top is being constructed. In one photo you can see visitors on top of the the 1911 Fire Control Station built in 1911. Hopefully, when the trail is completed we will be able to go into the Station as before. At the top there are nice views of Waikiki, bunkers along the surrounding rim of the volcano, a graffiti filled depression, a 1917 light house, and the mountains.
