En tant que jeunes artistes, Rembrandt et Lievens ont partagés un atelier à Leyde.
Lievens a peint son ami avec un hausse-col en métal et un béret. Rembrandt s'est également dépeint dans la même tenue à plusieurs reprises au cours de cette période.
Dans ce petit tableau, Lievens a non seulement enregistré la ressemblance de son ami, mais il a également imité son style, adoptant les couleurs sombres caractéristiques de Rembrandt, de puissants contrastes de lumière et d'ombre et de minuscules rayures dans la peinture.

As young artists, Rembrandt and Lievens shared a workshop in Leiden.
Lievens painted his friend wearing a metal gorget and a beret. Rembrandt also portrayed himself in the same outfit a number of times during this period.
In this little painting Lievens not only recorded his friend's likeness, but also imitated his style, adopting Rembrandt's characteristic dark colours, powerful contrasts of light and shade and tiny scratches in the paint.
