the exit

When I came upon this large beach cave off of Route 1 south of San Francisco, I first started shooting angles going in. As I was leaving the cave I thought I’d try one facing out even though the light contrast between the cave shadows and bright beach light was way too great. I set to bracket exposures hoping that I might be able to make the image work with a lot of HDR tone mapping. I really liked the framing of the opening but wanted something more. So I got set to shoot a silhouette SP when up comes this family group of 4. I asked them for their help as models and they agreed. I arranged them in a line and made the exposures. I could not be happier with result. My only regret is I did not give them my card. I think that this photograph would make an interesting addition to the family album.

Whether it a beginning, or the end
We cannot say,
For all we know,
Is the threshold
Where we stand,
As shadows perched
Upon a moment,
As a prick of thought
Caught upon a singular breath
Of awareness.
