festival faces

I really love street portraits. However they are most difficult for me to take because I am very shy about asking strangers if I can photograph them. As I say on my profile page: I am too timid too often when asking people to let me photograph them. To work on my inhibition I've been going to some fall festivals with the camera. This is a great environment to shoot in because people tend to be so outgoing and expressive. Hope you enjoy my therapy results.

What fun! Many of these have a timeless quality about them. Good for you to push you're boundaries. I have a difficult time asking people to take their photograph too.

Yes I really enjoyed this gallery. There is a warmth that comes across in the images, when the people knowingly play the game, a natural sense of fun here. Good therapy!

Agree, festivals are great if you're a bit reticent about photographing people. The results here are excellent. Wouldn't have guessed people shots were difficult for you :)

This is something close to my own heart. I wish I was more outgoing as a person so that I could take more portrait photos where I really engage with the subject, but I find it very difficult to do so as I'm naturally quiet. When I am out of my comfort zone (ie in a foreign country) I become bolder, and being in an unusual environment seems to have worked for you here very well. Nice idea to choose festivals too as they're always full of interesting characters, which you have showed.

Yes, I do enjoy the results of your therapy. I had the same problem but found when you ask politely surprisingly many people agree to pose, but then you have the problem that it is just that: a pose. Which is nice but you don't get natural pictures unless they pose for a real long time until they get more natural again. Candid has its role too but makes me queasy as well.

Good question JD I want to ask for 2 reasons. First I feel like I am invading the persons privacy and that inhibits me. Second and more importantly, I want the person to actively engage in the making of my photograph. In other words, I want the person to say yes and become my instant model. The goal is to develop a quick chemistry between us that I can then try to capture in the photograph. Bill

I like and understand the therapy, but why do you ask to start with? I shoot without asking... and never got myself in trouble.
