I attended Dow Elementary in the early 60's
Mrs. Chumly was my 4th grade teacher.
Mr. McCalmett was our principle,
I call him the man who was a poet and didn't know it, he was too busy being a principle
Yet Everyday at half past three,
He'd come to our class, so we could see,
How he could write
A funny little poem, about a funny little worm
That would make all the little children,
Giggle, Laugh, and Squirm.

Mrs. Miller, on the other hand was our librarian, I recall the day she stopped by our class one day in November 1963 to say with tears in her eyes,
,"Our President has been shot",meaning President JFK.

Class was dismissed, I and some of the boys ran all the way to the Houston Chronicle to get the latest Chronicle to sell on the street cornos in Houston. When I look at some of those familiar images posted on this websit it brings back all those memories I experienced as a child. Now I have grand children who are the age I was when I lived back then, and when I see them, I see myself . Now I understand why grand parents love their grand kids so much, even though we all GP's have our different reasons.
I still cry now and again but only within my self where no one can see me.
I now live in a small country town 2 hours northeast of Houston. I can't believe its been
that many years. Back then I'd look forward to the future, today I turn to look back to see where that future went.

My grandparents who owned a few houses in the Old Sixth Ward between 1900 and 1960 told me many stories of the Polish Mafia, that most don't know about.

I grew up at 1809 Lubbock from 2 years old up to 17 years of age. I truly cherish those years I spent living there, because believe me history was made there, such as the missle crisis, Martin Luther King, First man on the Moon, to mention a few historical moments. I drove by there last year, 33 years later, and there she is, that nice sweet home, that great neighborhood, St. Josephs, Dow Elementary, by golly, what a great place to have grown there!

i grew up at 911 sawyer street . its sad not to see the house still standing . i attended dow elem. & jr high in 30s- 40s . as a kid i worked for mr. gantt at huston drug store.i sure enjoy driving thru the old neighborhood

Hi Billie,
These photos of 6th Ward in Houston remind us of Hyde Park in Austin where we lived for 20 years in a house built in 1893. Memories!!
