Old Barn

Indiana, U.S.A.

Strange (re)Meeting:
The old barn looks bad but it is sturdy. Back in 1938 a violent tornado struck this area, wiping out many structures, i.e homes, barns, sheds and chicken houses. The original barn that stood here was one of those destroyed. Years later, and years ago now, my grandfather Herschel Byrer and Judy's grandfather, Clarence Campbell, were together at a family gathering dinner. It should be noted that previous to this dinner Judy and I had recently been married, bought and moved into her grandfather's home place, which included the barn pictured above. As most (of us) old people do the conversation got around to the good old days and big storms. Clarence mentioned his barn had been blown down in '38 and some men from the Shiloh area had helped rebuild it while they were thrashing the winter wheat crop. Herschel said he was one of those and asked if Clarence remembered how he got the steam engine hung-up in that awlful quicksandy ground south of the barn. Of course Clarence remembered and they both laughed about it this time. Both had forgotten about two days work lost trying to free the old heavy steam engine, that was used to drove the wheat thrasher. It took several area teams of work horses and a lot of planks to get it back on solid ground.

Judy and I had never known that they had met before.
