10 June 2008: The day flood water backed into Elnora. White River, west fork, run a mile north of town, but floods all the low land in between. Levees and railroad grades hold back and redirect much of the water. What nobody saw coming was the speed with which this river came to town. With some 13-14 inches of rain over the weekend up north at Indianapolis, on already soaked and saturated ground, the water roared those 90 miles down river hitting all river towns and cities by surprise. Spencer, IN was quickly flooded in areas as never before. Back at Elnora the water rose faster than ever before, sometimes over a foot per hour. Backwater filled the various drainage ditches out around Elnora and surprised residents by raising into town from the south end. It quickly filled the low lying area of the White Rive Valley Antique Show grounds and began spilling up through the middle of Elnora. By afternoon it was at least a foot deep on Indiana highway 57, right in the middle of town and running through the carwash.
