Downingtown, PA. My home for over 40 years. I've lived in and around this town and have taught in its junior high and middle school for 38 years retiring in June 2011. I will randomly continue to add images to this gallery.

Nice photos. Haven't been there in 40 years, but when I was, the log cabin was not painted; it was rustic natural weathered wood. The town looks very spruced up.

I happened upon your site looking for info. on Downingtown, as I am a Downing and probably descended of several of your historical residents. It's nice to see an extensive album like this since I am on the West coast and haven't had a chance to visit yet. So fascinating! Thank you for sharing your images.

mr chiodo, i used to live in the downingtown area . i am 36 now and as a teen i loved going to the downingtown farmers market. i loved chris's roast beef sandwiches , and wenekis hawian pizza and i miss bob from the leather shop in the center. i also used to go to the ramada acrossed the street and play mini put inside and go to the underage club in the hotel. i have been away for many years and its sad that theese big parts of my childhood are gone. thank you for posting the pics of downingtown, they have brought back many memmories. please let me know if know where i can get any photos of the farmers market or the ramada. i tell my daughter about the market alot and it would be nice to show her some pics.she was too young to remeber the market. i still know a lady who ran the small gas station at the bowling palace side of the market but unfortunatley she lost her old pics. thank you for your time and thank you for the memmories. shane ross, sickchoppers@yahoo.com thanks again ps is the home of the blob dinner still there ?

Mr. Chiodo, I believe you were my 8th grade computer teacher in the D-Town Middle school the first year it opened(and/or the NGC) Your wife, I believe, was my English teacher in the Junior High. I am the youngest of the infamous Rosenzweig family. I didn't realize that you had been teaching for so long. Was my dad, Stephen, ever a student of yours? I found your site when I was searching for info on a rumor of "the site on William St" being linked to the high incidences of auto-immune disorders in the area. Would you happen to know anything about it? I look forward to your response, or anyone else on here that may know something!

I would venture this idea to locate pictures: Possibly in the archives of the Minquais/Alert, or Exton (now West Whiteland) Fire Companys. Also, Mr. McDevitt, former photographer for the West Chester Local newspaper, may have some too.

George In the late 50s and early 60s we lived in a house located on corner of the downingtown farmers market lot. My parents were managers of the Downingtown Farmers Market at that time. George : I grew up during the 1950's 1953-1963, just 4 miles from Downingtown in the Bradford Hills development, I also worked at the Farmers market and also would like to acquire old photographs of the market, especially the interiors, I worked at Daves@ Auctions which operated in the middle rear of the market. nice pictures. i am in seach of pictures of the old downingtown farmers market, as well as pictures of the old ramada inn and resort. and the original exton square mall before it expanded, and the exton drive in. if you know of where i may be able to find any of these please email me. tks

Thank you for your photos of D-Town. You have adopted the community and obviously take great pride in it. Sometimes it takes newer eyes to open the eyes of someone who left a long time ago. I grew up and still have family there so I return quite frequently but as so often happens with young people in a small town, I wanted to see the world. When I left in 1963, I looked forward and seldom looked back. Recently, I lost my Mother, Alice Ezrah, who was a life-long resident, born in 1915 at Pollock's Mill just off Manor Ave. My Aunt, Elizabeth Ezrah, is the oldest resident of Downingtown at 101. She taught at East Ward for 41 yrs, never drove a car, and until about 20 yrs. ago walked everywhere. Almost everyone knew Miss Ezrah! Johnson Town acquired its name because a man named Johnson owned most of the property in that area.
