Jamie Wyeth, "Portrait of Pig, 1970"

Jamie Wyeth is Andrew Wyeth's son, and the grandson of N.C. Wyeth.

The text from the audio commentary:

"One of the museum’s most popular paintings, Portrait of Pig is also an excellent example
of Jamie Wyeth’s ability to capture animals in paint. Whether animal or human,
Wyeth spends hours with his portrait subjects, studying them thoroughly both physically and
psychologically. To create an accurate life-sized version of this pig, he measured all details
of her body and carefully studied the texture of her hair. He learned that pigs are extremely
intelligent and able to be trained. Her contented expression may be the result of Wyeth
rewarding her with sweet feed, a molasses and grain mixture.

Look closely at how the artist masterfully represented the wiry texture of the pig’s hair,
using individual brushstrokes of many colors, more than you notice at first.
The straw is rendered with multiple tones of yellow and brown enlivened by drips of black paint.

Wyeth became so fond of this pig, whose name was Den-Den, that he purchased her from his neighbor
and brought her to his own farm, where, the artist reports, she lived to be 25 years old."
