"'The Nation Makers' by Howard Pyle, 1903"

This is one of my favorite paintings in the museum's collection.
I was happy to see it on display in the first floor Heritage Collection.
The museum rotates many of its pieces and with the model train display on the second floor,
some of the more commonly viewed pieces are not shown during the holiday season.

From the audio explanation of this painting:

"In this painting Howard Pyle depicts a counter attack at the Battle of the Brandywine,
fought on September 11, 1777. The American soldiers are defending the east side of the
Brandywine River, actually very near to the museum's current day location.
Though this battle was a defeat for the Americans, the tight grouping in the diagonal line
displays the determination of the soldiers."
