In this photo you see the "stolen pace car" approaching the road block set up coming out of turn 4. Also, note the "Alabama State Trooper" on the motorcycle in the grass beyond the road block. He plays a role in this too.
Everybody was ready to race and the moment had come to give the command "Gentlemen Start your Engines". Suddenly, the pace car took off. With the PA remaining silent, nobody knew what was going on. As the pace car came off of turn 4, he was running wide open, and as he approached the tri-oval the "Alabama State Trooper" on the motorcycle took off after the pace car. The pace car and the Trooper went into turn 1 side by side, but the pace car had the advantage. I think the Trooper made a mistake staying on the apron through turn 1 and 2,but He did go through 3 and 4 on the bank wide open and gaining. {I have always wondered how many laps it would have taken for the "Alabama State Trooper" on the motorcycle to catch the stolen pace car) On the second lap the "Alabama State Trooper" cheated. He stopped in the tri-Oval and got on the radio, and turned around going the wrong way on the track headed for turn 4. Where he had a road block set up. At about the same time the PA came alive to explained, what was going on, I shot this photo.
