I am looking for any info or stories about my Great great grandfather Johan Olaus Eriksen. 1833-1932 Or his family, especially his wife Marie Magdalene Nilsen 1838-1928. Here is what I know. As an orphan he was taken care of by strangers, and grew up in strained circumstances. When he was old enough his foster parents placed him as a shoemaker apprentice. He established himself as the master shoemaker in Tistedalen. The place wasn't greatly inhabited at that time, and it wasn't necessary to have police stationed there permanently. Eriksen was requested by the police commissioner in Halden to serve as police, beside his own trade. On that condition he began to serve as police constable in Tistedalen from the spring in 1869. (From 1869 he worked part time as a policeman.) From 1877 he worked full time as a policeman until 20.12.1901. He died 15.06.1902. Police office and shoemakers workshop was in this house where he lived with his wife and the 9 children. The local jail was in the backyard of the house. Police Station When the old Town Hall burnt in 1855, the fire proved to have been started in a nearby building by a 19 year old apprentice boy. The police had no premises, not even a prison cell, in which to keep the boy. The lack of premises led to a nomadic police presence and in 1860 the police station was located at Ebenezer until the new premises were ready in the marketplace. The building was soon ready, and on the 28th November 1863 the new District Prison was opened.The exterior of the building remains largely unchanged whilst the interior has been altered to meet the need for more office space. 10th September 1979 the police moved from their over 100 year old building to the new and practical Kreditkassen building in the market place. When the railroad was build it became more necessary to have police there, and E. was engaged as police constable in 1877. He left his occupation as shoemaker and became police constable in Tistedalen for almost 25 years, until he retired on December 20th 1901." Johan Olavus was "in his twenty-fifth year" when he married. Married 6. February 1859 in Berg kirke, Berg (Øf) [Parish register p.243 #4] to Marie Magdalene Nilsdaughter. Born 20. October 1838 [Edvin Haug: 800 Haldenprofiler p 136 #212]. Died 9. March 1928 [Edvin Haug: 800 Haldenprofiler p 136 #212].

I am trying to locate a family who had a farm on teh outskirts of Halden, called Eitzen. I knew Eisabet their daughter. Her father was a rotarian in Oslo.
