2010 Haiti Earthquake

Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 04:53:10 PM on the Church of the Nazarene Campus in Haiti
Bill out on campus right outside the office building
Martha in her office working on bookkeeping
Rachel in the kitchen cooking supper
Dr Warrick in his room sitting at the desk working
then the earth started to shake rattle and roll
Magnitidue 7.3 on the earhtquake scale
center in Carrefour, about 15 miles from the Nazarene Campus
everyone out of the buildings
walk around campus to check out the situation (see pics below)
we walk up the hill to check on others that live on campus
The Broyles, Michael, Karen and Kaydence are all alive and well
people standing around every place in shock and not sure what to do
all buildings on campus still standing with a few with cracks down the sides
the exterior security walls around the campus, large sections of it is down
eventually we realized that water is pouring out of the door of the W&W hotel, Bill goes in and the water heater is moved out into the floor and the pipes have broken and the whole floor is flooded, Bill gets the water turned off.

we had generator power and Hughes satellite for internet access to the outside world that bill set up after multi attempts

people on campus:
Frantz is staying on campus and he is safe
Edwidge and family are safe
Elise her house was destroyed and she and family are on campus, Elise has an injury to her leg but doing well
Marie and her daughter and son are staying on campus, she has an injury to her leg but doing well
Frankel in the office is well (he was in the office with Martha at the time)
Joe (the painter) no word on him or his family yet
Broyles, Michael, Karen, Kaydence all well

that night we set up a camp down at the tabernacle with the W&W camp stove, pots and pans
plastic cups that we had to wash and reuse
we fed 50+ people that night on campus (workers and their families from campus)
which included 1 slice of bread, 4 crackers with peanut butter, 2 slices of tangerine, cup of water (see pics below)
Frantz got all the W&W cots, 4 mattress and sheets for people to sleep on. We started out in the tabernacle but then moved outside under the stars due to the after shock.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
morning after, local people left to go and check on their homes and family
we go into the house to check on a few things, the china cabinet is turned over, cabinet doors open and food cans scattered all over the floor, anything hanging on the walls is in the floor, all items on the shelves have fell off and broken

Bill, Frantz and Dr Warrick go out driving around and takes pictures and talks to the local people (see pics below)

we met a family, the Williams with World Vision (they were at the Broyles house up the hill on campus) the morning after, the wife and 2 kids age 6 & 13 were in their apartment on the bottom floor of a 5 story apartment when it happened and the whole thing went down, they some how made it out with lots of bruises and abrasions and went over a few walls somehow and got up into a tree and stayed, Mr Williams came home and just knew they were dead, he did not find out till the next day that they were alive, they have a son that is visiting them for a few weeks (he lives in California and goes to a University there), Trevor was volunteering at an orphanage with special needs kids and had to help get them out of the building. When we met them that day, they each had just found each other 2 hrs prior, miracles do happen.

word, we are to get on the MFI flight that is coming in,(this was around lunch time and it was to be at the airport at 4pm, we are not sure how roads will be going to the airport) back to the house pack a carry on and get to the airport and wait
(pics below while waiting at the airport)
the airport building IS closed, the building is heavly damaged, it is difficult to get in and through the building to a woman sitting at a small wooden table that stamped our passport then outside to stand on.
lots of news crews there walking around, several large planes landing with cargo
(we leave PAP around 8 or 9, I didn't have a watch)

arrived into West Palm Beach (that is where the MFI plane had to land to go through customs)
very late, thanks to a local church that sent a guy over (sorry I don't know the church name or the man's name, will find that out and add it later)(now I think I remember the man's name was Dennis but not sure about that) he came and picked us up and took us to a hotel where we could shower and sleep
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thur morning meetings in Miami
that night fly home from Miami to Knoxville (70$ to get out of the airport, that was steep)
thanks American Airlines, they changed our flight dates and did not charge us a change fee price
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cell phone charger left in Haiti, went to sprint store in Knox across the road from the mall and they gave me a charger (used) for free, thanks sprint.

Sat night, Bill drives to Nashville to pick up a satellite phone that is being flown from California to Nashville to take back to Haiti with them

Church of the Nazarene in Delmas 33 Church and Belair have sustained "some damage" but we do not know the extent yet

Belair has a 60,000 water cistern two or three floors off the ground, extremely concerned about that situation

PEOPLE TRYING TO GET OUt OF HAITI - CONTACT Michael Broyles. I have 3 flights tomorrow (Sunday) that I can assist in getting you out on. 3784-3958 D or 3912-9699 V. Cell Circuits are busy, so try multiple times if you need to. You can also e-mail me at MBroyles@maf.org. Meeting at the "small airport" at 9:30 tomorrow.

(this info from Michael Broyles) NASCAR FANS - say a special thank you to Hendrick's Motorsports. He donated the use of his plane and pilots for 5 days to MFI. This means help and supplies coming in and evacuations going out. And believe it or not - this Nascar plane will make a right turn. I seen it with my own eyes!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday 17th, Bill and Martha head to Florida to fly back to Haiti. (after almost 2 hrs delay, the plane from Knoxville finally takes off)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18th: from: Terry Ketchum We received word this evening from one of our employees in Haiti that the large Bel Air church building, located near the Catholic cathedral in downtown Port-au-Prince, is still standing. However, he states that church members were killed during the earthquake. We have no idea how many.

7:36am just talked to Bill, they are to fly out (they thought on the 2nd plane but have been moved to the first flight and luggage to come on the 2nd one)

8am, from Michael Broyles: Getting ready to go to the airport. I will be processing 9 planes arriving with aid today - including one carring a team of friends from TN. Keep the prayers coming. This is going to be a months long project, not a weeks long one.
(the friends from TN are Bill and Martha)

8:44am Bill, Martha & Beth just left on the flight http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N508RH
from St Lucie County Intl (KFPR) @ 8:44am to Providenciales Intl (MBPV)
on the Hendrick Motorsports LLC plane out of Charlotte, NC
Rick Hendrick owner of Hendrick Motorsports, has loaned two of the team’s planes to the relief efforts in Haiti. thanks to the Hendrick's (Nascar)
the plane has landed in Procidenciales Intl Airport

10:42am EST, message from Franckel Formétus almost all the wall of the campus are down now.
a lot of people from outside come to stay on the campus to sleep. some stay all the day.
we are sleeping outside the house, they don't want us to sleep inside
WE ARE GETTING SOME RICE FROM RESTAVEK ORGANIATION SOMETIMES
SOMETIMS THE GENERETOR RUN FOR TWO OR THREE HOURS
THE DIESEL WE HAVE CAN TAKE AROUND 7 OR 8 DAYS
I AM IN THE OFFICE OF PASTOR LUCIEN TO FIND INTERNET

Scott Stargel Update: Just got off the phone with LINDA and COREY! Things on the Nazarene campus are "fine." Corey made it in this morning, bringing some supplies (fuel, food, meds) to the campus. The clinic is open, but is treating mostly minor things at this point. Hoping to get more direction in the next few hours.

Pernier Naz Church was destroyed, no word on injuries/deaths.

3:15pm, HAITI UPDATE: Bill Dawson just arrived at the Nazarene Campus (3:15p, Monday). Linda says that they are going to meet right now to discuss how to get to some of the harder hit areas.

MORE FROM LINDA. About 300 people are now using the campus as a place to sleep. The local workers are encouraging everyone to go to family in the outlying parts of the country. The Bible College kitchen is preparing a single meal each day for those who are on campus. Linda's working through the rations she took with her

11pm, update from Frantz, 400+ people staying on campus and feeding everyone every day in the cafateria
a block machine has been ordered to help rebuild the walls
no after shocks felt today
everyone still sleeping outside
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
19th Tue, 9:45am FROM COREY THIS MORNING: We had a good night of sleep and organized into 2 teams to go out into the city. There is also a team that is still looking for areas of need. We had a great breakfast of rice and milk and sugar. The teams will eat power bars for lunch and then back at about 5 for showers and supper. It seems calm but we will know more today

e-mail from Bill @ 9:45
Last night was the FIRST night since the quake with NO tremors. Now more than 24 hours they tell me.
We slept in the house on air mattresses by the back door, door unlocked open and only screen shut so we could run out if had tremors.
Have 4 organizations headquartering here. Going to try to buy cement and all the block we can today. Believe it or not SAND is going to be the problem. There's lots of it but not being transported.
Have 4 trained security guards from the US who arrived this morning. We are looking to hire a company today or tomorrow with armed guards until the wall is up.
Possibility US military will come here and bring orphans for processing. They are legion. This will give us diesel fuel, water, food and other commodities we won't find easily otherwise. We were able to get 1000 gal diesel through Dr. Morsch's group, Heart to Heart. We have almost 500 living on campus now. A bit crowded but we are getting by.
Medical Team is out on three different sites.
Later, Bill

PRAY FOR:

GLOBAL MINISTRY REQUESTS

Haiti Earthquake
Please pray for the people of Haiti. Rescue and recovery efforts continue in the country following a devastating earthquake on January 12. Below is an initial listing from the Caribbean Regional Communications Office of specific ways your can pray:

· In the South Central District the superintendent reports that 17 churches are down and many pastors’ houses have been destroyed.
· In the Central District, the Church of the Nazarene in Boutin is reported to be down.
· The Tabarre Church reports 8 people injured and many members have lost their houses.
· The Nazarene Church of Bel-Air has many of their members missing. There is still no report on the total number of people that have died, but there are three that are confirmed dead.
· The Nazarene Church of Lastic knows of one member that is still missing. All that is known is that her house is down and they have not been able to find her.
· The Petion-Ville Church of the Nazarene has reported that the church has lost members and 75% of the members have lost their homes.
· People are sleeping outside their houses in fear that they may collapse on them. After the first earthquake there was a damaged house that later collapsed and killed six people on Delmas Road.
· Food is becoming scarce and water is hard to get. Diesel is also running out.
· While at this time it is hard to tell how many members the Church of the Nazarene in Haiti have died, there is still hope and people are being pulled out of the rubble alive.

This is the time to continue to pray that God would give strength to those holding onto life and hope that those trapped may be found quickly. Continue to pray that food and water gets to the people and that God would give them strength during this time. 20 Jan 2010 6:03am
6.1 new quake hit about 35 miles northwest of the capital of Port-au-Prince. It struck at a depth of 13.7 miles but was too far inland to generate any tidal waves in the Caribbean.
Wails of terror rose Wednesday as frightened survivors of last week's quake poured out of unstable buildings. It was not immediately possible to ascertain what additional damage the new quake may have caused.

Scott Stargel HAITI UPDATE. Just talked to Edwidge. The campus definitely felt the aftershock this morning, but everyone is okay on the Naz campus. Early phone call from one of the districts that there's some new damage, but I couldn't get details.

NAZ NURSES ON THE GROUND IN HAITI Linda Stargel is fine. She says "I experienced my first aftershock at dawn. We all shot out of bed and out the door. You would be amazed what some people wear or don't wear to sleep in! :)"

NAZ NURSES ON THE GROUND IN HAITI From Linda: "We had already packed up a team to head that way before the aftershock, so they finished and headed out. The rest of us our headed back to the stadium soon, there will undoubtedly be more new injuries."

Scott Stargel HAITI UPDATE. District Superintendent from Port-de-Paix called Edwidge this morning, reporting that they felt the aftershock. Amazing, since PdP is on the FAR northern coast of Haiti. Edwidge has put calls out to the other leaders for information.
