Jared Gruenke knew it was only a matter of time before Sheboygan South's bats got going this season.
As the Redwings' top pitcher, Gruenke hoped to be on the mound when it happened.
His wish was granted at Wildwood Baseball Park on Friday night. That the offensive outburst came against Sheboygan North made it all the sweeter.
Gruenke limited North to two runs and three hits, and South pounded out a season-high for runs in a 12-2 pasting of their crosstown rival in a game shortened to five innings by the run rule.
"They clocked us," said North coach Chris Wright, whose team fell to 5-6 overall and 2-5 in the Fox River Classic Conference. "I don't know where we were today."
South (4-7, 3-5 FRCC) took out a half-season's worth of frustrations on the North pitching staff. The Redwings came into the game batting .160 as a team, and in seven FRCC games had only 10 runs batted in.
They eclipsed that total by the end of the third inning Friday.
…..
Ryan Hamm and losing pitcher Ryan Eigenberger drove in runs for North. Eigenberger struggled on the mound, giving up nine runs (eight earned), seven hits and four walks in two-plus innings.
