Military Appreciation Night 2010 Wildwood Park

Military All-Stars too much for A's
Team honors veterans, active members of military

The Sheboygan A’s played host to a group of highly esteemed guests on Monday night as they faced off against the USA Military All-Stars in a special exhibition at Wildwood Baseball Park.
The All-Stars, also known as the “Heroes of the Diamond,” are made up of active members of all branches of the military, as well as veterans.
The on-field ceremonies started with the presentation of the flag by several area color guards followed by a medley of armed forces fight songs performed by the Sheboygan Pops Band.
Former Army Technician Fifth Grade Harold Knuth, who served in World War II and was involved in battle in Northern France, the Rhineland and the battle of the Bulge, was honored for his service with a special flag passing ceremony. Harold then got to throw out the first pitch after taking his “Walk of Honor.”
Once the game was underway it was all USA as All-Stars pitcher Bruce Jazwinski held the A’s to just one hit in his four innings of work. Meanwhile, the Heroes were busy at the plate knocking out seven hits in the first five innings.
The A’s lone hit in the first four innings was a two-run double by Cody Marshall in the third, which cut the All-Stars’ lead to one.
That was as close as Sheboygan would get as the All-Stars would open the floodgates, scoring six runs in the seventh off of A’s reliever Eric King, who only lasted a third of an inning.
Sheboygan fought back in the eighth, scoring five runs of its own with the help of Doug Dekoning’s two-run double and a run-scoring single by Phil Kramsky.
The Heroes would get all five runs back in the top of the ninth, winning by a final score of 16-7.
“It was good to see all of the people out here,” A’s general manager Denny Moyer said. “I really hope the fans enjoyed it. I thought the opening ceremonies were first class, the veterans that came out did a great job and we really appreciate them.”
“I told the guys before the game that this is an experience that they will probably never have again in their lives,” said A’s manager Chad Gehr. “To play these guys, people who fought for our country, win lose or draw this was going be a special night for us.”
