From the Sheboygan Press...
Six more outs were all Sheboygan Post 83 needed to win its opening game of the Class AAA American Legion Baseball State Tournament on Saturday.
Unfortunately, De Pere scored six runs before that happened.
As a result, Sheboygan's second straight and third overall appearance at State could be a short one.
De Pere's rally in the bottom of the eighth inning erased a 5-1 deficit on the way to a 7-5 victory in the first round of the tournament being played in Plover.
"We played a great game, but take nothing away from De Pere," Sheboygan coach Paul Van Lanen said. "They are a strong team and you have to credit them for the ability to do things like that."
Starting pitcher Taylor Schwarz scattered seven hits and struck out seven in 7-plus solid innings of work for Sheboygan. Reliever Frank Raff took the loss.
Offensively, Mitchell Gardner had two hits and an RBI, Nohl Depies had a hit and drew two walks, and Raff and Schwarz contributed an RBI each.
Sheboygan, which finished fourth last season, now must play its way out of the losers' bracket of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament.
Post 83 is scheduled to play today at 10 a.m. against the loser of Saturday's game between Neenah and Wisconsin Rapids.
