The Shek O peninsula is on the extreme southeastern side of the Hong Kong Island. The name in Chinese means a "rocky bay" and explains the landscape. It is separated from the urban district of Hong Kong by a hilly terrain, thus able to retain most of its natural features and avoid destruction by real estate development.
