Fortress town of Terezín (Theresienstadt) in the Czech Republic. Originally built
as a fortress by Emperor Joseph II, it was used by the Nazis as a Jewish ghetto
and concentration camp during World War II. The town is located on the banks of
the Eger River. The fortress was built for defense against the Prussians.
During World War II, it served as a transit camp for Jews sent to extermination
camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau. A monument dedicated to the victims of the
Holocaust stands at the fortress.
