On the Grote Markt you will find the café Het Moorinneken.
The name of this building is not a direct reference to the Belgian Congo.
The name would have been taken from the adjacent building that was named
after the Middle Dutch Arthur novel De Moriaen. According to legend,
a clerk confused the name ‘Den Moer’ with ‘Den Moor’.
After all, the term ‘Moor’ was known from the late Middle Ages and was
considered a container concept for persons of African origin.
