The triumphal cross in St. Peter's Church in Leuven was created between 1490 and 1500,
presumably by the workshop of the Brussels sculptor Jan Borman.
It is even suspected that the figures of Christ, John, and Mary were
made by the master himself. The rood screen containing the triumphal cross
is the oldest preserved in Leuven.
The figures are depicted very realistically. The balance of expressiveness in
the draping and nuance in the figures' posture is striking. In the center,
Jesus hangs nailed to the cross. He is mourned by John and Mary.
Mary turns her face away from the cross, as if she can no longer bear the sight,
while John, on the other hand, cannot take his eyes off it.
