The triptych is a painting depicting the martyrdom of Saint Dorothea of Caesarea.
It depicts the torture and execution of Dorothea, a 4th-century virgin and martyr,
during the persecutions under Emperor Diocletian. The central panel depicts Dorothea
lying on the ground, being tortured. Legend has it that a pagan lawyer, Theophilus,
mockingly asked for fruit from the garden of her bridegroom (Christ);
a young man later brought her a basket of heavenly roses and fruit, which
converted Theophilus. Theophilus subsequently confessed to being a Christian
and was likewise tortured and put to death.
