Die naam is meteen al niet meer raar als je weet dat die afstamt van een locatie waar vroeger gedingen plaatsvonden, waar rechtgesproken werd.
Zo spreken we nu nog steeds van een kort geding. Het Dinghuis op de hoek van de Kleine Staat en de Grote Staat is tot halverwege de zeventiende eeuw
dus een gerechtshof. Het hooggerecht bevindt zich in het Dinghuis, het laaggerecht in het inmiddels verdwenen huis De Lanscroon, even verderop in de Grote Staat.
De kelder van het Dinghuis wordt in de tijd gebruikt als martelkamer en de zolder als gevangenis.

That name is no longer strange if you know that it comes from a location where litigation used to take place, where justice was administered. For example,
we still speak of summary proceedings. The Dinghuis on the corner of the Kleine Staat and the Grote Staat was therefore a court until the mid-seventeenth century.
The high court is located in the Dinghuis, the low court in the De Lanscroon house, which has since disappeared, a little further on in the Grote Staat.
The basement of the Dinghuis was used as a torture chamber and the attic as a prison
