The image shows a statue of the Virgin Mary with child above a detailed coat of arms.
The coat of arms is that of King Philip II of Spain (1556-1598). The design incorporates the coats
of arms of the medieval kingdoms that formed Spain, such as Castile (the castle) and León
(the lion). Variations of this coat of arms existed; some included the coat of arms of
Queen Mary I of England during their marriage. Philip II's coat of arms was modified from that of
his father by removing the double-headed eagle and the imperial crown,
as he was not Holy Roman Emperor.
