I think the most important secret is that I don't know what I'm doing. So, real artists probably will not succeed :))

Basically, what I am doing is to first crop a piece of interest out of the aerial photo and geometrically correct the shapes (i.e., remove the Keystone effect). The next step is to change brightness, contrast, saturation, and hue until the shapes that I'm interested in become more distinct. These preparations are done in Photoshop. For painting effects I take the prepped image over into Corel Painter and get the graphics tablet ready (that part has stopped me from doing more right now, because I don't yet have a suitable work setup ready for me; I sit on the couch with my laptop - not ideal for working with a tablet). Painter has tons of interesting art brushes. For the oil-like effect I use oil brushes or blender brushes and set the color to cloning, with the photo as the clone source. That way the brush picks up the color from the photo as I paint over it. The farmfields make are very easy to paint, because the shapes and patterns in the field are good guides for the direction of the brush strokes. I tend to paint with rather broad brushes. To get the 3-d effect of paint build-up and other texture in the paint, I use the "apply surface texture" filter in Painter with the painting itself set as texture source. I dddle with the settings until I like (or hate less than before) what I see. Finally, I go back to the tonal controls (brightness, contrast, saturation, hue) to diddle some more. At some point in time I loose my patience, and voila, the painting is done or the image is filed in the trashcan. The finishing touches are done again in Photoshop. By the way, the figurative paintings were done in Corel Painter as well. Again, I use the original photo as clone source for the initial coloring and to guide the brush strokes.

The composites are partially done in Painter and partially in Photoshop (the blending modes are slightly different). I have not spent the time to learn masks in Painter yet, so I tend to prefer Photoshop for compositing and image assembly. I also have more plug-ins and filters in Photoshop for pre- and post-processing the images for the composite.


Farm_Fields-13a. jpg is somewhat of an exception. I wanted to get pure shapes and lines like in a Mondriaan. So, I applied some tools of my past professional work life, namely Microsoft PowerPoint, before heading back to Photoshop and Painter.
