Bernard Leferink was a engine driver for many years

But, no matter how you classify it, staying warm is a high priority for a driver in winter.
In Holland, daytime temperatures are most of the times above freezing, but snow happens!
The problem is the frequent drizzle and the open-to-the-elements cabs of the locomotives.
Most places on the footplate of a loco seem about equally cold or wet, except right in front of the fire door when coal is being added.
And, unfortunately, if you are right in front of the firebox door when coal is being added, it must be you that is doing the adding, so it is hard to think about how lucky you are!
Bernard certainly did catch a few colds in his days and perhaps we could blame the hazards of his job on his early demise, he died of pneumonia.
