Johan van Oldenbarnevelt arrives in Port Melbourne May 1956

Here she's again, chartered by the Dutch government to carry migrants to Australia. After a five week voyage, the 'newcomers' soon will set foot on land.
Can't wait to hug my family again after 21 months of parting.
This ship was built in the same year I was born, but didn't see the same distance, as it went down to the bottom of the sea in 1963 at a relative young age of 33.
It had been purchased in that year by a Greek Line and renamed 'Lakonia'. On her first cruise for them and four days out from Southampton just before Christmas,
fire broke out and the once great ship was no more.

Her age at 33 when she finally went down near the Canary Islands was still formidable. That kind of ships usually don't live much longer, most of them ended up to be sold for scrap, alas.
Now again, in het 26th year then, what a great sight it was, seen both from the quayside as from the grand old lady itself. Precious for all of us who once participated in that quite moving spectacle of (depature and) arrival, wherever it was.
