Sunday morning after church, we have a game of cards, usually it was 'harten jagen' (hunting for hearts), 'twenty-one', 'canasta' and one of the favourites 'klaverjassen' a populair Dutch card game played by four persons in two couples, who sit opposite each other, forming a team. So two against two. It was not a silent game, the passion ran high at times and there was as much time spent in 'na-kaarten', going over failings or revising rules, how the game SHOULD have been played.
The thirst was quenched with numerous cups of coffee, layered with thick cream and mouthwatering 'sprits', a type of Scotch fingers from baker and confectioner Burgstede.
Coffee tasted so good, no wonder as it was the last article rationed, up to seven years after the war was over, no more coupons needed.
